This month, ballet may not be exactly how you remember it.
In our classiest venture yet, Purge attended a preview for FUSION, Atlanta Ballet’s upcoming show. We were blown away by both the muscles and the talent. Fusion will feature Lambarena, a blending of Bach with traditional African rhythms, and The Rite of Spring, a world premiere choreographed by Christopher Hampson. Both appear to be a world away from Swan Lake.
“While our beloved classics like Nutcracker and The Four Seasons will remain next season,” says Katherine Hernandez, Atlanta Ballet marketing assistant, “We’re venturing outwards, creating a distinctive artistic profile that celebrates athleticism and thrives on the frontier of new choreography today.” Both FUSION and Ignition— premiering in May—focus on the new, the young, the explosive and exciting.
With a new identity comes new digs. Atlanta Ballet’s studios have moved into an enormous, LEED-certified, restructured warehouse on Marietta Blvd. Together with their two smaller locations, they teach upwards of 7,000 students in the area, from infants to pre-professionals (i.e., high school-age kids).
