I had a packed schedule this Labor day weekend but I would have been damned if I didn’t make room for my all-time favorite convention/party/holiday/freakshow. Dragon*Con 2010 was a total black out blur, so this year I decided to save myself the hangover grief and act somewhat responsibly. Tim Song and myself made our way through the increasingly difficult security to find all the usual and unusual suspects. Aside from our brief, low-key appearance, everyone else appeared to be having the time of their lives. As they should. Here’s a snapshot of this year’s antics through our eyes.
“Print Not Dead!” At least not to some of us. With e-book readers on the rise and bookstores going out of style like guilty verdicts, it makes you wonder if a hardback will soon be a thing of the past. Thankfully, with the gaining popularity of chap book and small literary presses with the focus being on quality over quantity– we have a “New Hope”.
When I first spotted Rene Dellefont at the Euclid Yacht Club, he was sitting on a stool, vodka soda in hand. The seasoned improvisor of Dad’s Garage and organizer of the EARL’s Catch 23, Rene, not one to tire of performing, had just returned from a 10-day improv festival in Canada. “I got to be on stage with a goat,” he told me. Before getting to the meaty stuff—bombing, heckling, and kissing girls—I wanted to know if the goat had told any jokes.
